RII Track-2

Responses to the NSF EPSCoR Track-2 Program are submitted through the Collaborative Proposal initiative of the NSF.  The South Carolina and Tennessee EPSCoR State Committees have formed an exclusive partnership for response to the NSF program solicitation.  Responses to this statewide call that describe research, education and workforce development activities in collaboration with faculty at Tennessee institutions of higher education or staff scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory are more likely to be selected for further development.

In anticipation of the release of an NSF EPSCoR RII Track-2 solicitation, the South Carolina EPSCoR/IDeA State Committee is requesting pre-proposals to continue a cyberinfrastructure consortium with the Tennessee EPSCoR State Committee.  Cyberinfrastructure is defined as “the organized aggregate of technologies that enable us to access and integrate today’s information technology resources – data and storage, computation, communication, visualization, networking, scientific instruments, expertise – to facilitate science and engineering goals” (Fran Berman, Director, San Diego Supercomputer Center/UCSD).

The science and engineering research that will be facilitated by the proposed cyberinfrastructure improvements will be the primary driver for RII Track-2 investments. Such investments will facilitate discovery and innovation, and enable the development of a science and engineering workforce that has the knowledge and skills necessary to design, deploy, and apply cyber-based tools. Over the long term, RII Track-2 investments are expected to result in:

    • extended remote access to cyber-enabled facilities such as Oak Ridge National Laboratory;
    • expanded participation in science and engineering through cyberinfrastructure by institutions, organizations, and people; and
    • effective and sustainable partnerships between academic researchers/institutions that advance scientific research, promote innovation, and benefit society through the use of cyberinfrastructure.
