The National Institutes of Health (NIH) responded to EPSCoR through
the creation of an Institutional Development Award (IDeA), which
granted South Carolina with a $17 million IDeA Network of
Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) to strengthen collaborative
biomedical research at colleges and universities throughout the
state.
Additionally,
the NIH has awarded grants to the Medical University of South
Carolina and the University of South Carolina to establish four Centers
for Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) in cardiovascular
disease ($11.3 million), colon cancer ($11 million), lipidomics and
pathobiology ($10.9 million), and oral health ($8.7 million).
