Two South Carolina faculty members have been named Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) recipients. Since 1996, the PECASE has been acknowledging the contributions of scientists and engineers who have been advancing STEM education and community service through scientific leadership, public education and community outreach. This is the highest honor given by the US Government. Recipients are scientists and engineers beginning independent research careers and demonstrating exceptional promise for leadership in science and technology. Recipients are nominated by a federal funding agency.
Suzanne Adlof is a faculty member in the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina. Her research "aims to improve understanding of language and reading impairment and develop effective interventions to improve literacy outcomes." She was nominated by the US Department of Education.
Mark Blenner is a faculty member in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Clemson University. According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the agency nominated him for his work pioneering the use of synthetic biology.
According to Blenner, “The nomination came from NASA, but was a culmination of the work I’ve done as a junior faculty. Part of that work included the projects funded by SC INBRE and a SC EPSCoR Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program award.”

Says SCRA, “These matching grants are highly competitive, and only reviewed twice a year.”

- Solicitation Period: July 1 to August 14
- Submission Deadline: August 14, 5 pm EST
