GEAR CRP Proposals
Due Next Monday
The goal of the GEAR Collaborative Research Program (GEAR CRP) is to encourage faculty researchers at South Carolina’s predominately undergraduate institutions (PUIs) and three comprehensive research universities (CRUs) to build collaborative CRU/PUI academic research teams that will compete effectively for research funding. GEAR CRP grants will be awarded to build and enhance the network of scientists in the state that will conduct research related to MADE in SC. Proposals submitted in response to the solicitation:
  • must include two investigators with a senior faculty from a CRU and junior faculty from a PUI.
  • proposed research must be collaborative, demonstrates a connection between experiments and Modeling and Computation Core (MCC) efforts (theory, computation, simulation, etc.), and be clearly aligned with the Materials Genome Initiative (MGI).
Read more about the MGI Framework adopted by MADE in SC.

Full Proposal due Monday, November 9th, 5 pm EST

  • must be a collaboration between two investigators from Clemson, MUSC, and/or USC Columbia
  • proposed research must be collaborative, demonstrate a connection between experiments and Modeling and Computation Core (MCC) efforts (theory, computation, simulation, etc.), and be clearly aligned with the Materials Genome Initiative (MGI). Read more about the MGI Framework Adopted by MADE in SC.
  • preferably, the collaboration is between a senior faculty member and a junior faculty member. Senior faculty members are those who are at the full professor level or who have been at the associate professor level for more than two years.

NSF EPSCoR RII Track-2 FEC
Now Available
NSF EPSCoR has recently released the FY21 Track-2 solicitation on “Advancing Research Towards Industries of the Future to Ensure Economic Growth for EPSCoR Jurisdictions.” Only one proposal (as Lead PI) per institution is allowed, and a Letter of Intent (LOI) is due to NSF by Fri, Dec 18.

These awards require collaboration with other EPSCoR jurisdictions. The amount of an award increases with the number of collaborating jurisdictions on the project. NSF limits a researcher to be the PI or Co-PI on one Track-2 grant

All interested South Carolina institutions are encouraged to conduct an internal selection process to identify the most competitive research idea from their faculty and submit a LOI to NSF. Each institution that submits a LOI to NSF can receive SC EPSCoR proposal development funds by emailing April Heyward, SC EPSCoR Program Manager, by Friday, December 18, 2020
DOE FY 2021 Implementation
Funding Now Available

DOE recently announced a funding opportunity for up to $24 million for new and renewal grants under the Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (DOE EPSCoR). The grants, to be awarded competitively on the basis of peer review, will help institutions in EPSCoR-eligible states to conduct research while building capabilities to enable these regions to compete more successfully for other federal funding for research and development (R&D).

Funding for EPSCoR Implementation Grants is intended to improve research capability through the support of groups of scientists and engineers, including graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, working on a common scientific/technology theme. Collaboration with DOE’s national laboratories and leveraging of DOE Office of Science user facilities are encouraged as a way of broadening the network of those performing energy-related research across the nation.

DOE will accept applications for new and renewal grants. Initial awards are for up to two years and with possible renewals to extend the awards to a maximum of six years. DOE anticipates that up to $24 million will be available for this program in Fiscal Year 2021, contingent on congressional appropriations.

Preliminary applications are required and are due on December 15, 2020. Final applications  are due on March 2, 2021.

2021 Governor's Awards for Excellence in Science Nominations

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2021 Governor's Awards for Excellence in Science. The Governor’s Awards for Excellence in Science honors specifically an individual or team within the state whose achievements and contributions to science in South Carolina merit special recognition and promote wider awareness of the quality and extent of scientific activity in South Carolina. Candidates must currently be working in South Carolina or must have conducted a substantial portion of their work within the State.
