As an example, the yellow and blue cores operate in a continuous feedback loop with one another, aiming for the TMS core to guide the EXP core toward acceleration of the materials research/development/discovery process, and toward optimization of materials design and performance. In turn, the EXP core informs the next iteration of TMS activities. The green (DS/DB) core represents the emergent tools of machine learning and data science, to learn design principles, to determine bounds on performance properties, and to optimize material performance across the design and processing parameter space. The databases are positioned to use the information generated by the broader community and to share the information we generate with the broader community.

MiSC projects that have two or more of the three elements (EXP, TMS and DS/DB), in an iterative loop, with a goal to accelerate the materials research/development/discovery process, will be considered as using the MGI approach. Going forward the projects will have to clearly articulate the two, or more elements of the following three that are being integrated in their project, in an iterative manner:

  • Physical experiments
  • Theory, modeling and/or numerical simulations
  • Data science including databases
Each project will clearly articulate the information that is being shared between cores and compared between the relevant cores and how the loop is being closed to accelerate materials research.
